Born 1852 Nikolsburg, corset maker and composer. Elkan Bauer could not read or write music, but the melodies he whistled were written down and performed in open-air concerts in the parks and coffee houses of Vienna. His granddaughter, Auschwitz-survivor Elisa Springer, is the author of "Das Schweigen der Lebenden" (The Silence of the Living). Elkan Bauer was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and was killed there the same year.

Born 1914 Vienna, pianist, composer, composition teacher, graphic artist. Private piano instruction, harmony with Alban Berg, counterpoint with Ernst Kanitz, architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna. Graduated in graphic arts at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. 1938 crossed the Swiss border with the help of famous gendarm Karl Grüninger, interned at Diepoldsau, where he conducted the choir. After 1945 was choir director in a refugee camp in Santo Domingo, then teacher of music history, harmony and counterpoint at Erskine College, USA, as Ernst Kanitz' successor. Gallery owner and concert organiser in Due West, South Carolina, USA, where he lives today.

Part owner of bicycle warehouse 'Breuer & Co.' 1938 flight via Czechoslovakia to London, where he arrived with his wife, painter Clara Sulzer, on August 25, 1938. Died 1939 London. Breuers wife had a school of painting in Vienna. After her escape to London she was engaged at the Austrian Centre.

Kept a shop for philatelists in New York; also active as a composer, painter, sculptor, and writer. 1946 and 1948 winner chess-puzzle championship. Died 1970 New York.

Crossed the Pyrenees on foot, then by ship from Portugal to New York. Took part in Viennese music events there (a.o. as 'Frosch' in J. Strauss' Fledermaus at the Pythian Theatre). Returned to Vienna 1946, artistic director of 'Kabarett Simpl', stage director, writer and cabaret star, radio programs, film. Died 1971 in Vienna.

Studied at the Stern'sches Konservatorium Berlin, solo violist at the Comedic Opera, Berlin. 1918 conductor at the Carltheater Wien, afterwards founder and conductor of the Tanzkapelle Isy Geiger, which performed a.o. in Café Splendid on Stephansplatz and in the RAVAG. 1936 invited to Italy to reorganise the popular music department of Italian Radio. Composer of popular music. 1938 exile in Great Britain, conductor of a 'tearoom- orchestra' in London. Died 1977 in London.

Librarian Ottakringer Volksheim, took evening-classes, including composition under Paul Amadeus Pisk. 1929 completed hat-making training, milliner in Schottenfeldgasse. In 1933 her poetry was first published. 1938 exile in the USA. Mimi's parents were deported and murdered. Seasonal worker in hat salons in New York, organised cultural events, wrote lyrics and music for popular-music singer Greta Hartwig-Manschinger. 1960-63 active at the Austrian Forum New York, until 1995 lecturer and singer, from 1964 onward editor of exile anthologies. Died 1997 in New York.

Born 1890 Guntramsdorf, piano instructor. 1911-12 studied piano at the Viennese Musikakademie under Professor Sturm; 1912-14 under Georg von Lalewicz, then worked as piano instructor. 1938 exile in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she lived for some time in the house of her former teacher Georg von Lalewicz and his wife and afterwards with her sister Adele. In the exile Frida Grün kept on working as a pianoteacher. She died in Buenos Aires in 1969.

Choir director and conductor at the Stora Teatern. 1949-70 manager of the printed music archive of Swedish Radio (SBC), piano teacher and composer. Important for the reception of the Wiener Schule in Sweden. Died 1991 in Stockholm.

Wrote a ballet playbook for the composer Erich Zeisl (Pierrot in the Flask); worked as a private instructor until the end of his life. His students include Fred Liewehr, Vilma Degischer, Elisabeth Epp, Erika Herbert. Professor h.c. (honorary degree). Died 1976 in Vienna.

Upon arrival held for 6 months by the British Mandate Force, worked later as a jazz singer. Both parents were deported and murdered. Married to guitarist Uri Klausner, lived in Jerusalem. Born 1897 in Brno, composer, conductor, pianist. Son of feared music critic Julius Korngold. Studied music under Robert Fuchs, Hermann Grädener, Alexander Zemlinsky, Karl Weigl. Prodigy in composition. 1921 conductor Stadttheater Hamburg, where his most famous opera 'Die tote Stadt' (The Dead City) premiered in 1920. 1926 Kunstpreis (Art Prize) of the City of Vienna, 1927 professor of music theory and conducting at the Akademie (now Universität) für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. In 1927 his opera 'Das Wunder der Heliane', which Korngold considered his most important work, premiered. Beginning 1934 longer stays in the USA as an opera conductor and composer of film music. Won Oscars in 1936 for the music to the film 'Anthony Adverse' and in 1938 for 'The Adventures of Robin Hood'. 1938 exile in the USA, where he worked until 1946 for Warner Brothers Music, composing for numerous films. With the money he earned he supported many refugees. After 1945 he again composed works for the concert hall. His return to Europe in 1949 was a bitter disappointment; he returned to Hollywood in 1951, where he died in 1957.

Leopold Krauss-Elka came in 1941 with aprox. 1000 other jewish refugees under the protection of the italian army from Split/Croatia to Tarzo/Italia, where he was in a interment camp Krauss-Elka was organist in the parish church from Corbanese, composed works for organ and instructed. 1943 he was able to flee and reached through San Marino Sorrento, where he founded a musicband with other refugees and performed in nightclubs. Died 1964 in Vienna.

Attended the secondary school BRG VII in Kandlgasse, 1938 was forced into the "Judenschule' in Grasgasse. 1938 flight to the USA. 1941 music arranger, film composer at 'Booths and Saddles Pictures' in Hollywood, cabaret pianist, musical and revue director in Hollywood; composer of songs for revues, radio, television, US Army troop shows. 1946 New York; 1951-55 worked as pianist and singer in nightclubs. 1955 return to Vienna, pianist and singer at the "Marietta Bar'; co-director 'Intimes Theater', cabaret with Gerhard Bronner, Helmuth Qualtinger, Carl Merz, Peter Wehle; 1958-62 Munich, 1976 Berlin, 1991 Salzburg; radio and television composer, founder of the TV-production 'Die heiße Viertelstunde' (The Hot Quarter-Hour). His satirical opera 'Der Aufstand der Schmetterlinge' premiered in Vienna in 2000. Georg Kreisler now lives in Basel, Switzerland.

After graduation 2 seasons with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; 1947-97 first violin Cleveland Orchestra, first violinist Symphonia Quartet. Kurt Loebel now lives in Cleveland.

A Mother's Song), sung by Gisela Werbezirk. In 1915 founded Max Pfeffer Publishing, Bösendorferstraße 1, 1010 Vienna, with branches in London and Paris. In 1938 the publishing house was 'aryanised'; Pfeffer had to flee to France and in 1940 to the USA. In New York he founded another publishing house; after this, his trail disappears completely.

Born Joseph Wiznitzer 1920 in Czernowitz, engineer, amateur violinist, violist. Brother of Beate Popperwell. Studied violin in Czernowitz under Professor Främer, and under Joseph Zimbler and Norbert Scharfberg in Vienna. Attended the secondary school (BRG VII) in Kandlgasse, school friend of Julius Rudel. After graduation learned leather-working, training as X-ray technician at the Rothschild hospital. 1939 escape with a student certificate for the Technion Haifa, Palestine, coffeehouse violinist (Haifa garden café 'Kompanijetz', Nazareth Café 'Abu-Nasser'). Until 1947 studied violin under Jascha Mejerowitz, employed at the city administration. 1967 graduated as a construction engineer. Member of the amateur Orchestra of the Employee Organisation of the City of Tel-Aviv. Joseph Porath lived in Israel until his death on September 24th 2002

Born 1880 Vienna, pianist, piano teacher, choirmaster, Sängerknabe at the convent of Heiligenkreuz, 1901 composition under Robert Fuchs and piano at the Conservatorium der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (now Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst) Vienna. 1904 graduated with honours, silver medal of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Private piano and theory teacher; instructor at the piano school Schwender for the pedagogical state exam. Made piano reductions for Breitkopf & Härtel, Universal Edition, Schott (Korngold operas). 1904-20 choirmaster Wiener Chorverein, 1915-20 choirmaster of the Schubertbund, 1921 instructor for piano at the Akademie (now Universität) für Musik und darstellende Kunst Vienna. 1929 professor for didactic methods, pedagogical literature, 1933 member of the disciplinary commission. In 1938 his contract was not renewed, and only in 1945 did he again teach piano classes at the Musikakademie, 1946 retirement in poverty. Died 1953 in Vienna.A part of the musical estate of Rebay is in the music library of the convent Heiligenkreuz.

Golden seal ring at the celebration of his 25th anniversary as a member of the Wiener Staatsopernchor, fired April 1, 1938. Flight 1939 to Zurich, where his trail is lost.

Studied piano under Julius Epstein, Eusebius Mandyczewski, Feruccio Busoni. 1909 correpetitor under Felix Mottl at the Munich Hofoper, 1913 conductor Mozart-Festival Munich. Accompanist to Leo Slezak, Lotte Lehmann, Roland Hayes. Premiered the "Drei Nachtstimmungen' by Erich Zeisl in 1931 with Oskar Jölli in the Viennese Konzerthaus. 1936 Professor h.c. (honorary degree), 1937 recordings with Elisabeth Schumann in London, 1938 exile in the USA. Voice coach and accompanist at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia. Died 1968 New York.

Stolz (Pythian Theatre), 1943 correpetitor at the NY City Opera, 1944 debut as conductor and rehearsal director; 1945-52 director 3rd Street Music Settlement School, 1957-79 music director New York City Opera and New York City Light Opera; 1978 debut at the Metropolitan Opera, 1979-81 chief- conductor, 1974-78 director Kennedy Center Washington; chief-conductor of the Cincinnati May Festival; Caramoor Festival, 1979-85 Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, international guest conductor. Born 1906 Vienna, pianist. 1924-25 studied organ, harmony and acoustics at the Akademie (now Universität) für Musik und darstellende Kunst Vienna. 1935 exile in India (Benares), where she met the author, painter and photographer Richard Lannoy in a circle of artists and intellectuals in 1960. In 1962 she became a "Sanyasini' (pupil) of Mataji , changed her name to Atmananda and she lived the ascetic life of a"saduka". Died 1985 in Benares.

Born as Ludwig or Leopold Pollitzer 1878 Vienna, operetta singer, actor. Engagements among others at the Carltheater and Johann Strauß-Theater Vienna, actor in silent films. Sang "Danilo' in the premiere of Lehárs "Die lustige Witwe' (The Merry Widow), Theater an der Wien, 1905, and was portrayed in the title picture on the programme that Lehár signed for Hitler. 1942 arrested, released thanks to the intervention of Theo Lingen, shortly thereafter again arrested again. 1942 deported to Theresienstadt, killed there in 1943.

Born 1911 Drohobycz bei Lemberg, Poland as Leopold Wulwek. Pianist, composer, lawyer, accordeonist, contrabassist, piano teacher and cabaret artist. In 1914 his family moved to Vienna, law studies at the Universität Wien, music at the Akademie (now Universität) für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. Popular musician, led Kapelle Dr. Volé; employed by the RAVAG (Austrian Broadcasting Company) as pianist; prize-winning composer (Lilo Alexander sang) in the Vienna jazz competition in 1937. Cabaret star at the Prague "Urania'. Flight 1938/39 via Prague to Palestine (Israel), where he earned a living as piano teacher and bar pianist. 1948 studied contrabass in Holland and in Israel under Leon Groon, contrabassist in the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. His son Gabriel has also become a contrabassist at the IPO. Died 1967 in a car accident on the way to a Baroque Festival in Abu Gosh/Israel.

From 1940 NBC Symphony Orchestra, 1941-45 Metropolitan Opera New York, 1947-49 chief conductor NY Philharmonic Orchestra, artistic advisor. Numerous guest appearances in Europe, many recordings. Died 1962 in Beverly Hills.
